>>The general public can get relief. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan have given their hints. If petrol-diesel is kept at a higher rate of GST, the current price could be halved.

>>At present, the central government levies excise duty and state VAT on petrol and diesel. The tax rates for both are so high that petrol prices of Rs 35 have gone up to Rs 90 to Rs 100 per liter in different states. On February 23, petrol was priced at Rs 90.93 per liter in Delhi, while diesel was priced at Rs 81.32. On which the Central Government collects tax of Rs. 32.98 and Rs. 31.83 respectively. When GST was implemented on July 1, 2017, petrol and diesel were excluded due to high dependence of states. Now Sitharaman has called for a joint venture between the state governments to bring down the prices of these petroleum products.

>>If petroleum products are included under GST, there will be a uniform price of fuel across the country. Not only that, if the GST Council opts for a lower slab, prices could fall.
